Canada produces about 300,000 tonnes of soybean oil per year, and processing capacity continues to grow.
A Range of Options
Soybean oil from Canada can be solvent-extracted, mechanically extracted and/or certified organic.
Canadian soybean oil is sold in many forms, ranging from the crude bulk product to fully refined cooking oil, packaged and ready for grocery store shelves.
About one-third to one-half of soybean oil produced in Canada is exported, mostly for use in food production. Versatile, mild-tasting and rich in polyunsaturated fats, it is a favourite choice in home and commercial kitchens.
The Canadian Grain Commission regulates the grading of soybeans but there are currently no official grading standards for soybean oil. To guide negotiations between buyers and sellers, the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA) has developed a set of recommended trading rules. Safety is assured through close monitoring by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
